Democracy ripping itself apart

By ANDREW TESAURO
The worst thing about American politics is the fact that most people fail to see past their own personal interests.
This many seem like a blanket statement.
That’s because it is. Republicans, Democrats, Green party members and everyone else can never simply compromise and work towards the goals they are supposed to be achieving in the first place. For example, take a look at Congress. One of the few things they agree with is the fact that they deserves giant raises at every available chance.
Take the recent bailout plans. People on all sides stood up for what they believe and did so for a very long time. While the economy continued to die behind them, the elephant and the mule stood roaring at each other with neither one wanting to compromise. Meanwhile, the few moderate members of the House and Senate stood by calling for a truce, watching as Wall Street came crashing to the ground.
